The Pope County Board of Commissioners appointed Chief Deputy Sheriff Nathan Brecht as the next Pope County Sheriff at its January 21, 2025 regular meeting.
The County Board was presented with incumbent Sheriff Tim Riley’s resignation in December, where Sheriff Riley stated his intent to retire from office at the end of March 2025. Having accepted Sheriff Riley’s resignation, the Board acted to declare that the office of Pope County Sheriff would be vacant upon Sheriff Riley’s retirement and make an appointment to the office for the balance of the Sheriff’s current term in accordance with Minnesota law.
By this authority, the Board by resolution appointed Nathan Brecht, Starbuck native, long-time Pope County Deputy Sheriff, and current Pope County Chief Deputy Sheriff, to assume the office of Pope County Sheriff effective upon Sheriff Riley’s retirement at the end of March 2025.
